Hi, I’m Danny Mederos, the owner of Mederos Marketing Group, a Rio Grande Valley marketing agency that builds websites and creates social media content for local businesses.
Before you trust anyone with your website or your social media, you should know who they are. So here’s my whole story: the wins, the losses, and why I chose the RGV to build this company.
I started at the dish pit
My first real job in the restaurant world was washing dishes at Einstein Bagels. I didn’t stay there long. I worked my way up, step by step, until I was the district manager for South Florida, responsible for 14 stores.
That job taught me what every small business owner already knows. Payroll is real. Slow days hurt. And customers don’t care how hard you work unless they know you exist. That last lesson is the one that pulled me into marketing.
Learning marketing the hard way
I earned my bachelor’s degree in marketing and communications from the Art Institute of Fort Lauderdale, and my marketing career officially started in 2015.
I co-ran a wedding production and photo booth company with a partner. He ran the events and I handled all the marketing. At our peak, we were booking more than 50 events every weekend. Then 2020 came. Between COVID and burnout, we shut it down.
TropiBowls: opening a restaurant two weeks before the world closed
My wife Natasha and I opened our restaurant, TropiBowls, in South Florida on March 1, 2020. You know what happened next.
We should have closed. Instead, we leaned on marketing to survive. Social media, content, local buzz, all of it. In about three years we grew to four locations, and then a bigger company bought the name. We exited on our terms.
Something else happened along the way. Business owners kept asking us who did TropiBowls’ marketing. The answer was me. That question is how my first marketing agency was born, helping South Florida restaurants, builders, dental offices and service businesses grow.
Running the whole show
Later, I was hired as director of marketing for a South Florida law firm. That role grew into director of marketing, operations and sales, and I was effectively running the office. In about a year and a half, we grew the firm from roughly $70,000 a month to roughly $700,000 a month.
That experience changed how I think about marketing. A pretty post means nothing if the phone doesn’t ring. Marketing has to connect to sales, follow-up and operations, or it’s just decoration.
Why I ended up in the Rio Grande Valley
When Natasha landed a job as a pastry chef at SpaceX in Boca Chica, we packed up and moved to Texas. Today we live in Los Fresnos with our daughter.
I’ll be honest: I fell in love with the Valley fast. I also noticed something. The RGV is growing quickly, but a lot of local businesses are still invisible online. Outdated websites. Facebook pages that haven’t posted in months. Unedited AI images that get roasted in the comments.
These businesses deserve better, and they deserve someone local who actually shows up.
